The Rise of the Second Floor Laundry Room
The preferred location of the washer and dryer in the home depends on the homebuyer; some prefer to have it closer to the bedroom, while others prefer to have it stashed away out of sight in the basement.
There are arguments to be made for either case, but there’s no denying the convenience that comes with having a second floor laundry room. Since most of the laundry created originates upstairs anyway — sheets, towels, and, of course, clothing — it stands to reason that keeping the washer and dryer close by to save yourself the hike up one or two flights of stairs makes sense.
A second floor laundry room also ensures that your unmentionables remain out of sight when you’re entertaining houseguests; if you haven’t yet had the chance to put your laundry away, you can keep it hidden from prying eyes. What’s more, you can save space by eliminating laundry hampers altogether — just throw your laundry directly into the washer at the end of the day.
Of course, there are considerations to be made when building a second floor laundry room: vibrations caused by the machines when in use (particularly during an unbalanced spin cycle) can damage walls. If the laundry room isn’t ventilated properly, the machines might just put too much moisture in the space, especially when it’s integrated with a bathroom. When Minto builds a second floor laundry room in one of our homes, these concerns are addressed at the onset, ensuring that the only thing you need to worry about is separating your darks and lights.
