Mark Berlin and his husband, Blair Coomber, have been around the world multiple times - so they knew a landmark when they see it - and UpperWest definitely left an impression on them.
Mark and Blair, who have been together for 27 years, are both retired public servants. Blair was previously Head of International Trade Policy for Agriculture Canada and Mark was Head of International Legal Programmes for the Department of Justice. Today, Mark teaches International Development part-time at McGill University.
"We both enjoyed exciting careers that took us around the globe, so when we decided to look for a condo here in Ottawa we were looking for the Big Four: Location, Location, Location and Lifestyle," explains Mark.
When Xin Deng says that Minto UpperWest is "perfect" he's talking about much, much more than simply the brilliant architecture, inspired suite design and breathtaking views of the river and Gatineau Hills.
He's also talking about the big three in real estate: location, location, location. "The location is absolutely perfect for me," says Xin, adding, "I work in Kanata, but I wasn't interested in living in the suburbs. That's why Minto UpperWest is the perfect location for me. It's situated midway between where I work and where I play. I have fast, easy access to downtown when I need it, while avoiding the long commute to work that I'd have if I lived right downtown." Xin, who works as a software engineer, is already familiar with the countless joys of living in Westboro, as he currently resides just a little west in the Lincoln Fields area. "The shops and restaurants in Westboro are really great. One of my favourites is the Baker Street Café at 385 Richmond Road. They serve delicious, healthy food and I love going there for brunch on the weekends. There's usually a long line-up of people outside eager to be seated, but the food is so good that it's worth the wait. You should definitely add it to your to-eat-at list. Some people say it serves the best breakfast in Ottawa and the portion sizes are huge," he says.
Having looked at six or seven condominium properties during the six months he actively spent looking for a new home, Xin immediately know he'd finally found the right one when he heard about Minto UpperWest. "In addition to a great location in an established neighbourhood, the development's close proximity to the Ottawa River Parkway, with its amazing cycling and running paths and beach, is perfect for me because I do a lot of sports. I'll be able to jog and bike on the pathways, kayak in the river and go cross-country skiing in the winter in my own backyard!" "Best of all, because it's a condo there's no snow to shovel or grass to cut. That means I can spend my free time doing what I love - meeting up with friends or participating in sports activities - instead of doing chores."
Did Minto's reputation for building excellence impact his decision to purchase a one bedroom Kensington suite on the 11th floor? "Absolutely," Xin says. "I have a lot of friends who have lived in Ottawa for a long time and they told me about the first-class communities and buildings that Minto has built over the years. I also talked to my lawyer and he gave Minto his stamp of approval too."
