April 7th - A Message from CEO Michael Waters [COVID-19 Employee Update]

Hello everyone,

A further update for all of you:

  • On the Communities side of our business, home deliveries continue in all of our markets, albeit with some delays.
  • Last Friday, the Ontario government announced additional restrictions on residential construction. Projects where an above-grade structural permit has already been granted for condominiums, or a footing permit granted for single-family, semi-detached and townhomes can continue moving forward. Homes without permits will be put on hold until the restrictions are lifted. Good news: The overwhelming majority of our 2020 home deliveries now have permits. As always, we’ll continue to live by strict protocols in place for on-site staff and trade partners to ensure physical distancing and a safe workplace.
  • We continue to move forward on construction in Calgary, and in Florida and South Carolina while observing enhanced safety precautions.
  • I’d like to acknowledge our Commercial property team members who have been working closely with tenants—many of whom are facing financial hardship and temporary business closures. We’re helping provide support with rent deferrals as needed, and our leaders are continuing to work with all levels of government to identify additional assistance. There are several programs available now that we’re proactively sharing with tenants, including federal government credit support and wage subsidies to help alleviate some financial stress.
  • Our Apartments team members across all regions continue to work with residents who are unable to pay their rent by offering a new rent deferral program. Thank you to the team for supporting one another, being present for our residents, and doing the right thing.
  • To all front-line staff on-premises at our construction sites, apartment properties and commercial buildings, a huge thank you for your continued partnership with our skilled trades, residents and tenants as we all navigate this health crisis. Your presence and support have been pivotal.
  • We would like to hear from you on how we’re managing this crisis. This week, you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts and feedback on how we’re adapting to the pandemic as a company. Look for a link on Wednesday morning to complete an anonymous survey that will guide our approach to future information sharing and support for you. The survey will close at the end of day on Thursday. We will compile over the weekend and share results next week.
  • To help consolidate your FAQ and prior communications shared, we’ve put together an employee webpage with valuable information. It can be accessed here.
  • As a final reminder, our offices are closed to outside visitors and all but essential staff. Government officials and health authorities are asking us all to observe physical distancing or work remotely where possible, and we’re asking you to follow this direction until we’re told otherwise. These measures are in place to protect your health - and the health of those around you.

Thank you for your patience, support and understanding.

Michael
