How to find the right school

Each school board has a comprehensive system in place to help you register your child at their new school.

This includes everything from a school-locator based on where you live, to an itemized list of all the documentation you’ll need to make the registration process as smooth as possible.

Choose which school board is right for your child and spend some time together exploring their websites.

If you’re new to Canada and need help navigating our school system, the school boards also have great Family Reception Centres that offer support.

Is your child starting kindergarten for the first time?

If your child turns four years old before December 31, they are eligible to start kindergarten by September of that same year. Make sure to visit the school board site of your choice for more details. Many schools will host open houses so you can visit and meet teachers and staff before making your decision. Sending your child to school for the first time is a huge step — make sure you’re comfortable with where they’ll start their education.

If your child is transferring schools

Transferring your child to a different school is a straightforward process — there are just a few forms to fill out. Be sure to check with the board of your choice if they have transfer deadlines.

If you are considering switching your child to a new board altogether — such as from a public secondary school to a Catholic high school — be aware that often specific requirements must be met before a transfer can proceed.
