Mahogany's Winter Wonderland
There’s always something to discover in and around Mahogany during our warmer months, and winter is no different. With frosted windows, wood smoke drifting upward from chimneys, and festive lights adorning the streets, Manotick’s charm seems all that much warmer during the colder months. You never have to go far to get your fill of winter activities.
Manotick’s Winter Carnival
Every winter, the Manotick Village Community Association hosts Shiverfest, a fun, frosty event for families and kids of all ages—even the young at heart.
Typically, the festivities kick off on a Friday evening with hot chocolate and a bonfire, followed by a skating exhibition and public skate at the Manotick Arena. Just a block away, families enjoy the thrill of enchantment at the Manotick Legion’s indoor magic show.
On Saturday, you can dine on a delicious pancake breakfast hosted by the Kiwanis Club, followed by a day of childrens’ activities including crafts, story time, martial arts exhibitions and sleigh rides! Curling demos at the Manotick Curling Club or bingo at Manotick United Church are also great ways to beat the cold. The annual Chili Cook-Off is a must as well—the perfect opportunity to test your culinary prowess, or simply sample some delicious creations. Live musical performances are sure to entertain, with opportunities to share your talents at the open mic throughout the afternoon and evening.
Hit the trails
If escaping to nature’s beauty is your calling during winter, you won’t have to go far to savour some gorgeous cross country skiing or snowshoeing trails. There are two Rideau Valley Conservation Authority destinations just outside Manotick where you can hit the trails on a snowy day. Chapman Mills Conservation Area is just north of Manotick along the Rideau in Nepean, while Baxter Conservation Area is south of Manotick, near Kars. Remember to take some sunflower seeds with you to feed the chickadees along the trails!
If you feel the need for speed, then you must check out the Rideau Snowmobile Club where you can meet other enthusiasts and hit up any number of groomed trails throughout rural Ottawa, not far from Manotick.
