Over three months after heavy equipment arrived, and approaching two months after the official ground breaking event, construction is moving along for 123 Portland Street, a new condominium development in Toronto's Fashion District from Minto Communities GTA. The Sweeny &Co Architects-designed boutique luxury building will soon rise 14 storeys from the corner of Portland and Adelaide Street West, and current excavation activity is now setting the stage for the tower's upcoming vertical ascent.

The initial phases of work involved drilling for the site's shoring systems, starting in July, using both caisson as well as pile and lagging walls to retain the surrounding soil. With shoring now complete, the familiar red and yellow-painted excavators of Micheal Bros Excavation have begun to dig down to create the pit for the project's foundations and underground garage.

So far, digging is just the first couple metres down, but over the coming weeks, crews will dig down to just over 10 metres below street level to reach the base of the excavation.

Once excavation is complete, the installation of a tower crane will follow, allowing the start of forming for foundations and three parking levels. The underground levels will house a total of 57 parking spaces in a mix of 49 long-term resident and 8 short-term visitor spaces.

123 Portland will add 117 new homes to the Fashion District, with residents to benefit from a range of sustainability features, as well as a selection of amenity spaces appointed by interior designers U31.
