Random acts of kindness

‘Tis the season to be kind to others, and what better way to do that than through small gestures that cost little to no money. It’s an easy way to make your day – and a stranger’s spirits brighter, too. Even better, being nice is quite contagious and there’s a good chance your random act of kindness will be paid forward.

Doing good feels good

Let’s be honest – the holidays are a busy, often stressful time of year. More often than not we’re racing to get all of our shopping done, and between the crowded malls, scarce parking and what-the-heck-do-I-get-them panic, we sometimes forget the reason for the season. So, here’s a thought: why not pause for a moment each day and think about carrying out a random act of kindness? For instance, the next time you’re in line for a coffee (to keep you fueled through all that shopping), surprise the person behind you by paying for their double-double. Or pop a quarter in an expired parking meter to help someone avoid a ticket – and maybe even leave a note on their windshield to wish them a nice day. Small things like picking up trash on the street or carrying a neighbour’s groceries create positive energy that has a deep effect on your mood – and affects the people around you.

A little goes a long way

We love all the great ideas you’ll find here on the Random Acts of Kindness website, from leaving a generous tip for a waiter, to sneaking a note into a library book, to replying to a post you enjoy. All easy things to do that feel good! You’ll also find a long list of simple ways to make someone’s day right here on Buzzfeed. Something as seemingly insignificant as putting your phone away or letting someone into your lane can go a really long way.

Get the kids involved

Teaching kids about kindness is a good practice to follow every day – not just during the holidays. Doing a good deed, no matter how big or small, is a fantastic way to learn about compassion and service. How about shovelling an elderly neighbour’s walkway? Or complimenting a friend on their outfit? There are so many ways to put a smile on someone’s face – all you have to do is give it a shot.
