Restaurant Profile: The Brock House Kitchen and Bar

Located on Brock Street North, in Whitby, The Brock House Kitchen and Bar is an upscale casual diner that exudes a Muskoka feel. A proud member of the Durham Region sine 2009, The Brock House is a well-known destination for business lunches, family dinners, friendly celebrations and the best weekday specials in town. We sat down with Maddie Neshevich, General Manager of the Brock House to discuss why this restaurant is a Whitby staple.

What was the inspiration behind the Brock House?

We had been searching locally for a unique building, one that could accommodate a restaurant with a western feel, in the style of a chalet or cabin. We have always tried to distinguish our restaurants through our menu and décor, while keeping food and service as the most important ingredient!

There are a lot restaurants in the Durham Region founded by your family – what makes Brock House stand out amongst the others?

Since a young age, my father, Chris Neshevich has always loved to entertain guests and the art of food. He was fortunate to grow up in a family of restaurateurs. At the age of 20, he owned his first restaurant whilst completing his university degree. From there he continued to open successful restaurants with the help of family members and friends. A few years after Chris opened Hot Rocks (also in Whitby), a friend and former Liquor rep Russ Kent, came on board as business partner. With 15 years of success at Hot Rocks, together they decided to extend their success to The Brock House. Luckily for both Chris and Russ they are now able to pass the torch on to their children. Russ’s daughter Jen, is General Manager of Hot Rocks and [my partner Matt and myself] are managing The Brock House. There is no doubt that our success comes from pure love of the industry, many late nights, busy days, and always making sure our guests are arriving hungry and leaving full and happy.

Do the menus change seasonally?

We strive to give our guests fresh and local ingredients. We source our most of our ingredients from local farmers and distributors. Having said that, we like to change our menus seasonally so that we can provide those seasonal ingredients. During growing season, we have a large garden that provides fresh produce for some features and menu items. Our top goal is to provide, when in season, fresh local ingredients to our guests.

What dishes are your most popular at the Brock House?

At the Brock House, we are known for our Prime Rib, we slow roast our prime rib everyday for 8 hours to a perfect medium rare. Other guest favourites are our Chicken and Waffles (for those lovers of sweet and savoury). Those guests, who are hungry, love our two and a half-pound shepherds pie, and our house made goat cheese and short rib ravioli is always a crowd favourite.

Why do you believe so many people keep returning to the Brock House?

The Brock House strives on giving our guests top service, quality food and an experience they will remember.  From Chef Sean Lemmon, to the Management Team of Matt and myself, and the Ownership guidance of Chris and Russ, all five factors have been able to bring so much knowledge to the table. This has allowed us to become one of the top restaurants in Durham Region. We all have such a huge passion for the restaurant industry and have been able to use knowledge from past experiences to grow The Brock House. We are always making sure we stay on top of the trends so that our guests, new or regular cliental, are hungry to come back for more!
