Last month, heavy machinery arrived at a cleared site at Portland and Adelaide in Toronto’s Fashion District to begin construction on 123 Portland Street. With shoring rigs already drilling away around the site's perimeter, Minto Communities GTA celebrated its ceremonial construction start last week with an event attended by a small group of employees and others, hosted in two separate sessions to minimize crowds and allow for adequate physical social distancing by attendees.

The August 12th event included opening remarks by Minto Communities GTA President David Robins, and the presentation to all department heads of a commemorative glass figurine with the 123 Portland building etched onto it.

Meanwhile, the early stages of construction are moving along for the 14-storey, Sweeny &Co Architects-designed boutique luxury project. Below-grade earth retaining walls are being formed around the perimeter of the site by shoring rigs, setting the stage excavation once they are done. Crews will create space for the building's foundations and underground levels, to extend just over ten metres below grade.

Excavation is to be followed by the start of forming, where crews will first build the building's three-level underground garage. Minto expects construction to conclude by Winter, 2022. Once construction wraps up, the building will introduce 117 new condominium units to the Fashion District. The project is promising a range of sustainability features, as well as a selection of amenity spaces appointed by interior designers U31.
