Minto Opens New JDSU Facility in Ottawa’s South End
January 25, 2008
Today marks the official opening of a brand new office and manufacturing facility for JDSU in Ottawa. Officials from JDSU joined Minto, the developer and owner of the building, and 400 JDSU employees at a ceremony to celebrate the move.
Located in the South Merivale Business Park, the new JDSU building is a 3-storey 150,000 square foot office and research lab on five acres of land. The ground floor is comprised of research labs and the upper two floors are offices.
For Minto, this is its first Build-to-Suit since acquiring the business park in 2005 along with the former JDSU headquarters at 3000 Merivale Road. That facility was leased to the federal government for occupancy by the RCMP in a 25-year deal finalized one year ago. Minto CEO Roger Greenberg indicated, “We are delighted to have been able to work with JDSU to develop a first class facility for their Ottawa operation. We expect that this is just the first of many new development opportunities for our Commercial group in the South Merivale Business Park.”
“Our new state-of-the art, environmentally friendly facility will help us to continue the JDSU tradition of optical and broadband innovation for years to come,” said Al Etterman, chief administrative officer for JDSU.
The new JDSU building has been designed to meet requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification. This is a standard that Minto is striving for in every new development whether it’s commercial or high-rise residential. Not only do these types of new and innovative energy conservation solutions make good environmental sense, they also good business and operational sense. Major design components in the new facility will optimize air quality and cut energy consumption by more than 25%. Plumbing fixtures will save up to 45,000 gallons of water per year.
This building is the beginning of Minto’s plans to develop its 40 acres in the South Merivale Business Park which, when complete, could include over 2 million square feet of Class A space.
