Minto becomes an official sponsor for future Barrhaven recreation complex

Ottawa, ON (December 06, 2013) – The new recreation complex under construction in Barrhaven South is now officially named the Minto Recreation Complex – Barrhaven.

The name was unveiled today by Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Mark Taylor and ward Councillor Jan Harder at the latest sponsorship announcement under the City’s Community Champions program. Roger Greenberg, Chief Executive Officer of the Minto Group received a Certificate of Recognition in the Leader Category from Mayor Watson and Councillors Harder, Desroches and Moffatt.

“Minto has a long history for touching the lives of many residents through their development of neighbourhoods and their community relations work” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Their sponsorship of this complex will again touch and enhance the lives of many families living in and around the Barrhaven South area.”

This $1.45-million sponsorship deal is over 15 years and the funding will help with the installation of an artificial field with lights at the 160,000-square-foot complex, which also features a six-lane, 25-metre pool, two NHL-sized rinks, a gymnasium, fitness centre, and seven multi-purpose rooms.

“We feel a corporate responsibility to give back to the communities that have helped make us so successful,” said Roger Greenberg, CEO of the Minto Group. “This partnership with the City demonstrates our belief that sports and recreation programs are one of the mainstays of a healthy, active community and it shows Minto’s commitment to support a neighbourhood where so many of our customers and employees live, work and play.”

“I speak on behalf of the many families in Barrhaven South when I say that I am so pleased to have Minto partner on this much needed recreation facility in this growing community,” said Ward Councillor Jan Harder.”In addition, the lit field will extend the playing season for many children, youth and adult leagues and avoid closures caused from heavy rain or snowfall.

“We are committed to provide high-quality programs, services and facilities to our residents,” said Community and Protective Committee Chair, Councillor Mark Taylor. “The partnerships forged with local businesses, like Minto, through the Community Champions program helps us to deliver on that commitment while providing greater value to our taxpayers’ dollar. It also raises the profile of the sponsoring community, creating a win-win situation for the City and their partners.”

The Community Champions program is a partnership initiative that invites businesses, community organizations, foundations and individuals to sponsor City of Ottawa facilities, programs, services and community initiatives.
