Hydro Ottawa Recognizes Minto for Commitment to Building Green
November 17, 2008
OTTAWA - November 17, 2008
As one of Ottawa's most established builders and property managers, the Minto Group has been a leader in developing some of the greenest buildings in the city. Hydro Ottawa announced today that Minto's multi-million investments in retrofits and efficient new construction projects has earned the company a place on its list of Companies for Conservation.
"With projects like the Net Zero home and LEED certification for new buildings, it's clear that Minto is making major strides with regards to environmental commitment," says Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "With each new energy-efficient investment, Minto is making their buildings greener and growing their real estate portfolio while lessening their environmental footprint."
The company's conservation initiatives have earned them national recognition. Green is good for business and Minto has lowered its operating budgets by more then $3 million each year by reducing water, gas and electricity consumption. Minto Place, its flagship commercial property in downtown Ottawa, received BOMA Go Green Plus certification earlier this year, and in 2005 the company received a first-place award from Natural Resources Canada for their energy retrofit efforts.
Minto has switched more than 35,000 incandescent bulbs to energy efficient compact fluorescent lights. The company has also replaced its T-12 fixtures with T8 lights, with more efficient electronic ballasts, and installed motion control technology in common areas, and premium efficiency motors to run pumps and fans. Minto Suite Hotel has its own 28-kilowatt co-generation plant, alleviating demand on the power grid during peak consumption periods.
In addition to improving their current portfolio, Minto has their eye on the future. The company has established itself at the forefront of green residential building by participating in CMHC's Equilibrium(TM) initiative to develop Inspiration - the Minto ecohome. Located in Manotick, Inspiration is awaiting platinum certification from the LEED for Homes program.
Minto is also adding to the green buildings at Minto Place with the construction of a fourth tower, 180 Kent Street, which will offer office space in downtown Ottawa targeted as a Gold LEED Canada candidate.
"These retrofit investments and environmental projects are part of a larger mandate of environmental responsibility at Minto," says Andrew Pride, VP of the Minto Green Team. We believe that lowering our environmental impact is an essential part of being a community leader and a well-run business.
'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.
